Oxford Listeria Agar Base, with addition of antibiotics, is used for the selective isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from food. Typically, L. mono is visible after 24 hours but continued incubation may allow for the detection of slower growing stains. Listeria hydrolyze esculin to produce black zones around the colonies while Lithium chloride and antibiotics are incorporated in the medium for selectivity.
